TUESDAY INSIGHT
JOINT ACCOUNT IN MARRIAGE.
Ladies and gentlemen,trust you have been enjoying every piece.
The topic before us today is the one that sparks a lot of controversy. To say the truth,this one pass me! (is above me).
In as much as I am not married yet,which might not quite qualify me to talk from experience on the subject matter,it is however the song singles get used to hearing before the marriage.
Even during pre-wedding counselling,it reverberates endlessly.
Couples are encouraged to operate a joint account in marriage for certain reasons which I wish to state;
1. Transparency between both parties.
2. "And two shall become one"- Unity.
3. Openness in the expenses of both partners.
4. Dependability.
5. Control.
While these points are very valid, I do not quite agree with the couple running one joint account in marriage because of the reasons above also. I will expand carefully;
- Transparency is not hinged on joint account in marriage,it is a function of the quality of a person's character. A person who is shady is pure shady nothing else and not even a joint account can change it.
- "Two shall become one"- I agree completely and this is how I react to that. Becoming one in destiny,ideas,thoughts and a common goal for the family not forgetting that this is a coming together of completely different and independent individuals who have different bodies and react to things differently.
While 'becoming' one (as I understand it is not an instant empowerment on the wedding day rathera journey that has no end),both partner still have different needs.
-The idea of openness in expenses is the proper thing for a healthy marriage. However,there are times of spontaneity and you need to quickly withdraw cash to sort an immediate need. But when it is a joint account,both partners must sign first before any transaction which leaves you stranded.
Also there is the place of surprising the partner of sending money to relatives which can majorly be a personal decision. You can still be open in your expenses to your partner without the surveillance of a joint account.
- It is not proper for a person to depend completely on another person particularly financially because it will definitely cause a strain. Truth is one partner has more needs than the other often times so it is almost as if the expense is not even which leaves the other partner feeling drained.
- Every person should learn the act of control on his/her partner effortlessly without the use of force as the joint account portrays in this light. As a married fellow,you should be accountable to your partner which makes it easy for them to advice and correct you when you err. Control is earned not forced.
While I will not agree with a couple running a joint account in marriage,i will also not rule it out completely. Here's my final verdict-
A joint account in marriage should not be created for the above earlier stated reasons,rather I would suggest that a couple maintains individual accounts as before marriage and have a joint account in the name of the family where both parties make a monthly deposit for the purpose of saving for raining days,children's school fees,vacations,ministry development and every other expense that requires a 'round-table' discussion between husband and wife.
It is risky for a family to run on one account managed by two persons. Wisdom is needed in all areas of life but extra wisdom is needed in marriage.
Dedicated to couples and singles who intend to have a blissful heaven-on-earth kind of married life.
I appreciate you all for reading. Please don't forget to share your thoughts. Xoxo
